Maths
At St Joseph’s we believe that all pupils can acquire a deep, long-term, secure and adaptable understanding of mathematics. In order to achieve this, discrete daily lessons are taught based on a mastery approach and the latest recommendations from the National Centre for excellent Teaching in Mathematics. Teachers use a range of recommended teaching schemes to ensure that lessons are best constructed both in structure and content to enable pupils to accelerate in their learning. Mathematics homework is set regularly from Year 1 to help pupils secure any new knowledge.
Our Maths Leader is a Maths expert and leads the NCETM Maths Hub for our local area. We are part of a project that aims to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children from Reception through to Year 1 and Year 2. The aim over time is that children will leave KS1 with fluency in calculation and confidence and flexibility with number.
